Looking to experience the Riviera like a local? These markets are where it all begins. No trip to the French Riviera feels complete to me without wandering through a local Provençal market. Honestly, it’s my favorite way to soak up the region’s spirit—the colors, the scents, the friendly chatter… It’s where the South truly comes alive.

Cours Saleya – Nice

I will never forget my first early morning stroll through Cours Saleya. The old town was just waking up, and the market was already bursting with vibrant flowers, sun-kissed red tomatoes, and fragrant olives. I couldn’t resist buying a little bag of lavender, and its scent still brings me right back to that sunny morning.

Pro tip: Don’t leave without trying socca, the crispy chickpea pancake. It’s best when it’s hot and straight from the oven!

Marché Provençal – Antibes

Under the covered hall in Antibes, it’s a feast for the senses. I spent a good fifteen minutes chatting with a passionate cheesemonger who insisted I try a fresh goat cheese drizzled with local olive oil—absolutely delicious! Here, everyone seems to know each other, recipes are swapped, jokes are shared… You will feel like a regular in no time.

Marché de la Libération – Nice

If you want to skip the tourist crowds, head to the Libération market. I found the juiciest peaches of my life there, along with a still-warm sourdough loaf. The vendors are happy to chat and share tips—and if you’re lucky, you might even leave with a bunch of basil “for your cooking,” as one friendly vendor told me.

A Few More Favorites

Vence:

A medieval square, characterful cheeses, and the perfect spot for an impromptu picnic.

Menton:

Citrus reigns supreme here! I brought home a jar of homemade lemon jam that disappeared in no time.

Cannes (Forville Market):

A touch of glamour, a world of gourmet treats, and the chance to spot local chefs shopping for the day.

Insider’s Tip:

Go early, chat with the producers, and don’t forget to bring cash—many stalls don’t take cards, and you wouldn’t want to miss out on a local delicacy.Provençal Markets You Can’t Miss on the Riviera
