Early Beginnings: Menton's history traces back to the 12th century with the founding of the Podium Pini settlement. In 1346, Charles Grimaldi of Monaco acquired Menton, bringing it under Grimaldi control.

Middle Ages: Throughout the medieval period, Menton remained under the influence of the Grimaldi family. By 1524, Menton came under Spanish protection, transitioning to French protection in 1641.

Revolution and Napoleonic Era: The French Revolution saw Menton annexed by France in 1793. After the fall of Napoleon, Menton returned to Monaco's control. In 1848, the town declared its independence from Monaco, seeking Sardinian protection, largely driven by a desire to avoid heavy taxes imposed by the Prince of Monaco.

Modern Era: The Treaty of Paris in 1861 officially integrated Menton into France.
