History and Heritage

Nice, a city with a rich historical past, offers a fascinating history that dates back to nearly 400,000 years. The discovery of a prehistoric encampment at Terra Amata attests to the prehistoric human habitation. Over the centuries, Nice has evolved through various significant historical periods:

Prehistory to Antiquity: The Greeks, Phocaeans from Marseille, founded Nikaïa, the ancestor of Nice, between the 4th and 2nd century BC. The Romans then took over by establishing Cemenelum, today's Cimiez.

Middle Ages: After the fall of the Roman Empire, Nice went through a period of turbulence before finding stability and growth in the Carolingian era with the establishment of the Abbey of Saint-Pons. Following the Treaty of Verdun in 843, Nice passed through different sovereignties, before becoming a part of independent Provence.

Renaissance and Baroque times: On 1388, a crucial event occurred: the consuls of Nice signed an act recognizing the sovereignty of the Count of Savoy, thus integrating Nice into the House of Savoy until 1860, except for short periods. This era was marked by conflicts, including the Italian wars and the famous siege of Nice in 1543.

Annexation to France: In 1860, after a vote, Nice officially became French. Shortly after, the city's tourist and demographic growth was boosted by the arrival of the railway.

Modern Era: The city continued to thrive in the 20th century, despite the trials of World War II. Nice has become a popular resort destination, attracting visitors from around the world, especially during the summer season, adding to the traditional winter season. Nice is the second most visited city of France after Paris.

Carnival of Nice

This event, one of the world's most significant carnival celebrations, is visited by hundreds of thousands of enthusiastic visitors. The much-awaited and fun filled event includes huge colorful parades, embellished floats, larger than life puppets, and themes based on the costumes. One of the special events and the most popular one is the Battle of Flowers, where the flower-covered floats will be driven along the Promenade des Anglais and people will throw flowers into the crowd. Nice Christmas Market

The Nice Christmas Market is an exciting event that has grown annually from being in the core of Nice in France to a place of love, power, and enchantment during winter. Lemon Festival in Menton

The traditional Lemon Festival or Fête du Citron in Menton is a splendid event held annually in Menton, France. Being visited annually by over 200,000 people, the festival displays amazing sculptures and floats made out of lemons, oranges, and various other citrus fruits. The Day Parade (Corso des Fruits d’Or) and the Night Parade (Corso Nocturne), are two of the main attractions of the festival, which are supported by the use of illuminated floats, music, and performances. The trees are covered with citrus blossoms, and the Biovès Gardens become a magical place that holds the "Fête du citron". Nice: Cimiez Monastery

The Cimiez Monastery is a peaceful haven that combines history, art, and spirituality. Nice Opera House

Originally begun in 1776 under the auspices of Marquise Alli-Maccarani, the Maccarani Theater became the Nice Opera House and accordingly was witness to a glorious period of transformation as well as a rather tumultuous past. Next, instead of the previously standing building in 1826, a new opera house was implemented that took design elements from Italy. The building itself, a rare beauty, and unique in its own way, with both the architecture in its composition and the interior designs weaving in local and international influences, was the first thing ever to be destroyed by nature. Reconstructing the building was done by François Aune and Charles Garnier himself approved of it thus the inauguration of the new Opera House in 1885 which was a modern structure with rich decoration, including the one by Emmanuel Costa. The Great success of the Opera House was able to come about because of the personality and actions of the then-Mayor of Nice, Jules Niçois.
