Saint-Tropez, a symbol of French Riviera glamour and charm, has a history that stretches back over millennia. Here’s an overview of its fascinating past:

Prehistory to Antiquity: The region around Saint-Tropez has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with archaeological evidence of early human settlements. The Ligurians were the first known inhabitants. Later, the Greeks established trading posts, followed by the Romans who recognized the strategic importance of the site.

Middle Ages: After the fall of the Roman Empire, Saint-Tropez endured a period of turmoil, including pirate invasions. In the 9th century, the Saracens established a stronghold, which was eventually driven out in the 10th century by the Count of Provence. The town was officially founded in 980 AD when Lord Grimaldi of Genoa was granted the land.

Renaissance and Baroque Times: In the 15th and 16th centuries, Saint-Tropez became a small but prosperous fishing village. The town was fortified to protect against further pirate attacks. Its strategic harbor allowed for trade and the export of local goods, including wine, olives, and fish.
